 The GSP Guatemalan Research Locations

Research Location 1 of the GSP’s study of satellite imagery of the Guatemalan genocide is the area containing the “Ixil Triangle” situated in the central sector of the Department of El Quiché, which experienced considerable government sponsored violence and genocidal activities during the period from 1979 to 1983.

Research Location 2 encompasses an area on the border of Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala between the Río Salinas and Río Lacaniúm. Characterized by a riverine, low-elevation agricultural district, Location II contained border refugee camps, which experienced considerable growth during the period from 1979 to 1986 corresponding to the increased violence in El Quiché.
