David Simon on Rohingya Genocide

January 17, 2017

GSP Director David Simon recently commented on the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, for the Yale MacMillan Center.  He notes the preponderance of evidence that genocide has been taking place, and addresses two patterns the Rohingya experience illuminates:  First, that genocide tends to be the ultimate expression of efforts to exclude a group politically.  Second, that genocide prevention remains a subsidiary concern to sovereignty and national self-interest, despite a decade-and-a-half of efforts to establish the norm of “responsibility to protect.”
